Real self-care is mostly just rest
Somewhere along the way, self-care became something you buy. A candle, a face mask, a treat-yourself impulse purchase, a weekend that costs money you would rather not spend. There is nothing wrong with any of that. But it has quietly buried the most basic, most effective form of self-care there is, and it is completely free. Rest.
Today is International Self-Care Day. The date, the 24th of the 7th, was chosen to nod at the idea that self-care matters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, not just once a year. Which makes it a good moment to strip the concept back to what actually helps most.
Rest is not the reward at the end of the list
Most of us treat rest as something to be earned. You rest once the work is done, once the house is tidy, once you have been productive enough to deserve it. The trouble is that the list never ends, so the rest never comes, and we run ourselves down waiting for a finish line that keeps moving.
Here is the reframe worth carrying past today: rest is not what you get for running yourself empty. It is what keeps you from getting there in the first place. You do not have to earn it. It is not a luxury or a soft option. It is maintenance, and it comes first, not last.
The unglamorous version is the real one
Genuine self-care is often the opposite of the version we are sold. It is not always a spa day. More often it is the plain, unphotogenic stuff:
An early night when you are tired, instead of pushing through. Saying no to the thing you do not have the energy for. A slow morning with nothing scheduled. Putting the phone in another room. Doing less, on purpose, without apologising for it.
None of that costs anything. None of it looks impressive. And all of it does more for you than another thing to own.
Winter is quietly on your side
There is a reason this lands well in July. In the depth of a New Zealand winter, your surroundings are already nudging you toward rest. The evenings are dark early, the mornings are cold, and the pull to slow down is strong. That is not something to resist. It is the season doing half the work for you.
So let the evening wind down earlier than you think it should. Lower the lights, get warm, and let the last part of the day be genuinely slow. Settling under the weight of a Groundd blanket on a cold night, with nothing left to prove and nowhere to be, is about as good as self-care gets. Not because of anything clever, just because being warm, held and still is what a tired body actually wants.
This Self-Care Day, skip the shopping list. The best thing you can do for yourself does not come in a package. It is just rest, taken without guilt, starting tonight.
